Coffee reduces the risk of basal cell carcinoma

U.S. researchers from Brigham Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School found that between coffee consumption and reduced risk of basal cell carcinoma is a connection.

The researchers analyzed data on 72,921 people gathered in the course of research Nurses' Health Study (observation was from 1984 to 2008) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2008). Skin cancer was diagnosed in 25 480 participants, of whom 22 786 became ill basal cell carcinoma, 1 953 - squamous cell, and 741 - melanoma.

The analysis showed that women who consumed more than three cups of coffee per day, 20% lower risk of other contracting basal cell carcinoma. And the men drank the same amount of drink, the probability of becoming a victim of this variety of the disease was reduced by 9% compared with those who consumed less than a cup a month.

Researchers were surprised that the number of drunk coffee was only feedback from the risk of basal cell carcinoma. On the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, coffee consumption had no effect.

Experiments on mice have shown that caffeine stimulates the destruction of damaged keratinocytes by ultraviolet light and significantly reduces apoptosis in the subsequent development of squamous cell carcinoma. However, scientists who analyzed the results of long-term observations have failed to find any evidence of feedback between coffee consumption and the likelihood of squamous cell carcinoma.
