Strawberry protects gastric mucosa from the damaging effects of alcohol

Those who can not abstain from alcohol, can at least minimize the damage to the stomach lining, if there will be strawberries, scientists say. A team of Italian, Serbian and Spanish researchers confirmed the protective effect, which has this berry, conducted experiments on rats.

Dr. Sarah Tulipani of the University of Barcelona, explains that "the positive effect of strawberries is not only connected with its antioxidant properties, but also because it activates the antioxidant defense enzymes and body."

Research has shown that a diet rich in strawberries may have a positive effect when it comes to preventing gastric diseases related to the generation of free radicals and other reactive oxygen species, according to a paper published by scientists in the journal Public Library of Science One.

In addition, they say, strawberries also may slow the formation of stomach ulcers in humans. Gastritis, or inflammation of the gastric mucosa are associated with alcohol consumption, but also can be caused by viral infection or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (eg aspirin). In these cases, the use of strawberries may reduce gastric mucosal injury, said Maurizio Battino from the Polytechnic University of Marche in Italy.

Scientists conducted an experiment on rats: within 10 days they are given daily to 40 milligrams of strawberry extract per kilogram body weight. Then the rats were given alcohol and analyze the state of their stomachs. It turned out that those rodents who ate extract, ulcers were smaller than the rest.
