What triggers Paget's disease (cancer of the breast nipple)
Scientists do not know the exact cause of Paget's disease, but two main theories suggest how the disease develops. One theory suggests that cancer cells, called Paget cells, form tumors in the breast, and then moved from the breast to the nipple surface, as a result of developing Paget's disease - cancer of the breast nipple. This theory suggests that more than 97% of patients with Paget's disease have breast cancer or a flow cell carcinoma - a disease in which abnormal cells are present only in the ducts of the breast in the chest. With further development of breast cancer, abnormal cells spread beyond the ducts in the breast tissue, the lymph nodes and other body parts.

Another theory suggests that the cells of the nipple spontaneously become cells of Paget.
